Section break ---- C*News Intro I'm ... w/ the top of the hour news ..... ---- E*EZ NEWS OCTOBER 9, 2019 ---- E*MND Deputy Minister Seeking Long-Term US Logistics Support Deputy Defense Minister Chang Guan-chong says the United States should give Taiwan long-term logistics support as well as sell weapons systems to increase (增加) the island's defensive ability. Chang spoke at the US-Taiwan Defense Industry Conference in Maryland. He said Taiwan "expects that our arms acquisition will not be limited to the weapons themselves but also include long-term logistical support." Chang says the support is crucial (關鍵) and something that should be a focus of future Taiwan-US cooperation. And the deputy defense minister says while the U-S has agreed to sell Taiwan Abrams main battle tanks and F-16V jet fighters, American businesses could also work with Taiwanese companies to build depot-level maintenance capacity in Taiwan. ---- E*New Taipei's Hou Shuns KMT to Forego 10/10 Flag Raising Event New Taipei City Mayor Hou You-yi says his administration will not be holding a flag-raising ceremony tomorrow to mark Double Ten National Day. K-M-T Chairman Wu Den-yih asked all cities and counties with KMT mayors and commissioners hold flag-raising ceremonies to celebrate national day and to show support for its presidential candidate. But Hou says he's decided to skip an official city government Double Ten Day flag raising event tomorrow due to plans already in place to hold a similar event on New Year's Day instead. The move comes amid (之中) concerns within the K-M-T about falling support for Han Kuo-yu by local government heads. ---- E*Danhai Light Rail to Commemorate Anniversary of Battle of Tamsui The Danhai Light Rail Transit system will commemorate the 135th anniversary of the Battle of Tamsui with a historically themed train and special one-day passes from tomorrow. The Battle of Tamsui took place during the 1884 to 1885 Sino-French War. According to the metro corporation, it will issue 1,884 limited-edition collector's sets containing an embossed one-day pass and commemorative (紀念) postcard for 99 N-T. The collectible one-day passes will be on sale at Hong-Shu-Lin Station and on the corporation's website. People who use the commemorative one-day pass will also receive free entry to a special event at the Hong-Shu-Lin Station - in which they're invited to dress up in Qing Dynasty-style clothing and have their pictures taken during the National Day Holiday weekend. ---- E*Trump declares it in writing: He won't cooperate in probe The White House will not cooperate with the impeachment inquiry in the House. AP correspondent Mike Gracia reports. < [CLIP] Slug: > ---- E*El Salvador Begins Mass Trial of Alleged MS-13 Gang Members El Salvador has begun a mass trial of over 400 alleged gang members, including 17 accused leaders of the feared transnational crime group Mara Salvatrucha, or MS-13. Sixteen suspects were in court yesterday while the rest watched via videoconference from prisons. Nearly 100 defense lawyers are on the case, which could last until November. The star witness is a person who apparently can identify by name and nickname each one of the alleged gangsters. Most of the suspects were arrested in 2018 when more than 1,500 special forces agents raided restaurants, bars, beauty parlors, beer halls, ranches and used car dealerships, seizing cash, bank accounts, vehicles and properties. ---- E*Pair get month terms for rigging child's exams Another wealthy couple involved in the college admissions bribery scandal has been sentenced in Boston.
