Section break ---- C*News Intro I'm ... w/ the top of the hour news ..... ---- E*EZ NEWS OCTOBER 3, 2019 ---- E*Tai-Ex opening The Tai-Ex opened down 81-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 10,866 on turnover of 3.6-billion N-T. The market lost ground Wednesday. Investors watched losses on Wall Street overnight, which came because of weakness in U-S manufacturing activity. But analysts say the downturn was limited (有限) because there are rising hopes that poor economic data in the U-S will lead the Federal Reserve to lower its key interest rates at it next the policymaking meeting. ---- E*Two Fire Fighters Killed Taichung Factory Blaze The Taichung City Fire Department says two fire fighters have died in an early morning blaze at a factory in Taichung's Da-Ya District. The fire fighters went missing shortly after they entered the burning building with thermal imaging equipment. And their bodies were found and recovered at just after 8 o'clock this morning. According to the city's fire department, the blaze was reported by nearby residents at 1:45AM at the factory on Zhong-Ho 6th Road. Fire fighters from seven of Taichung's districts were dispatched (派出) to fight the blaze at the disposable tableware (一次性餐具) logistics center - and reports say the blaze quickly spread to much of the building. An investigation into the cause of the fire and the deaths of the two fighters is now underway. ---- E*MOTC Not Ruling Out Closing Some Harbor Bridges Transport Minister Lin Chia-lung says his office is not ruling out temporally closing 17 bridges in ports across the island. There are concerns that they need to be checked and repaired (修理). Lin says his office and the Taiwan International Ports Corporation will now begin inspecting all the 17 bridges and make any necessary repairs. The bridges could be closed to traffic if problems are found. The statement comes after it revealed that the steel cables on the Nan-Fang-Ao Bridge in Yilan had not been inspected for 21 years. Experts says the cables had possibly corroded (腐蝕) and were likely the major cause of the bridge's collapse on Tuesday morning. ---- E*Trump lashes out at "fraudulent" impeachment inquiry U-S President Trump is calling the House impeachment inquiry a "fraudulent crime" against the American people. Democrats are investigating whether he improperly pressured Ukraine's leader for personal gain. Kate Fisher reports from Washington. < [CLIP] Slug: > ---- E*British Plane Emergency Landing in Greece Greek authorities say a British Airways jet carrying 158 people from Cyprus to London has made a safe unscheduled landing at Athens International Airport. Airport officials said the Airbus 320 took off from the city of Larnaca in Cyprus. It was in the air on Wednesday evening when the pilot asked for permission to land in Athens. Greek media say the pilot reported that a smoke warning indicator had come on but a check of the plane in Athens didn't reveal (揭示) any problems. The landing was trouble-free and all 152 passengers and 6 crew members left safely.
