Section break ---- C*News Intro I'm ... w/ the top of the hour news ..... ---- E*EZ NEWS JULY 4, 2019 ---- E*Tai-Ex Opens Up The Tai-Ex opened up 12-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 10,755 on turnover of 2-billion N-T. The market was under heavy pressure Wednesday. It fell more than 100-points, with large-cap tech stocks moving sharply lower, pulling down the broader market. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing dragged (拖) the bellwether electronics sector down, after news that US-based integrated circuit designer NVidia has shifted its orders to Samsung. Other tech stocks also fell, wtih concern over global trade. Investors were worried again about trade friction between the US and China. ---- E*EVA Air Capacity Increases as More Flight Attendants Return to Work EVA Air says it will have more flights for the rest of this week. 400 flight attendants who went on strike (罷工) have now returned to work. The airline says those flight attendants chose to return to work. Another 200 are waiting to get their work documents back. They handed their documents (文件) to the union when the strike started on June 20th. EVA says it now expects (預期) to operate 70--percent of flights through July 19th. EVA and the union have met for a 5th time, with the labor ministry hosting the negotiations. But they did not agree to end the strike. ---- E*Lawmakers Pass Bill to Attract Investment by Overseas Taiwanese Lawmakers have passed a bill to lower import duties on 15 agricultural and fishery products. This is part of government efforts to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership. The bill includes Japanese yam, Satsuma oranges, fresh and frozen fish, Chinese yams, bean paste, curry sauce and fermented (發酵) cereal drinks. The duties will be lowered by between 4 to 20 percent. This will lower the government's tariff income by 210-million NT per year. ---- E*RUSSIA OFFICIALLY SUSPENDS INF TREATY The Russian President has signed legislation that will suspend (暫停) a 1987 nuclear missile treaty (條約) with the United States. Ross Cullen has more from Moscow. < [CLIP] Slug: > ---- E*Italy Volcano Eruption Kills Hiker An Italian news agency says eruptions from a volcano on the Sicilian island of Stromboli sent about 30 tourists jumping into the sea for safety. Civil protection authorities said a hiker was killed during the eruptions. Molten material from the volcano ignited (點燃) a series of fires. Witnesses describe a very violent explosion, followed by a shower of lava material. They say people in the town of Ginostra barricaded (搭成) themselves in houses or threw themselves into the sea. ---- E*Australia Government Approves Tax Cuts Australia's reelected government has gained enough Senate support to win approval for 158 billion Australian dollars in tax cuts over a decade. Prime Minister Scott Morrison said his conservative coalition's election victory in May gave him a mandate to pass the tax cuts into law. The government hopes that the cuts will stimulate (刺激) a slowing economy that risks dipping into recession for the first time in 28 years.
