The Taiex followed other markets in Asia and closed higher Thursday. Investors were hopeful that a meeting between US president Donald Trump and China's president Xi Jin-ping might help lower (降低) trade tensions. ---- T*Presidential Office Denies Donating Funds in Support of Hong Kong Protests The Presidential Office says reports that the government donated (捐) money to support protests in Hong Kong are "totally fake". The reports, which showed up on social media Tuesday, said Taiwan's government donated $1-billion NT to help the protesters. Office spokesperson Ding Yun-gong says police are looking into where the claims came from. The Criminal Investigation Bureau says it got a report from the Presidential Office on Wednesday that a Facebook user named Li Chieh was spreading (散波) false information about the Tsai administration. The I-P address has been traced to Singapore to a Facebook user called Li Rong-gui. This person also spread false rumors before Taiwan's local government elections last year. ---- T*NTU Rises to 69th in QS World University Rankings National Taiwan University has been ranked the 69th best university in the world. The QS World University Rankings, based in Britain looked at hundreds of universities from around the world for the year 2020. NTU climbed 3 places from the rankings last year. It is the only Taiwan college in the top 100. 15 other Taiwan universities are also on the overall (整體) list. National Cheng Gong University improved the most, climbing 9 places to 225th. It has now replaced National Chiao Tung University as the third-best Taiwanese school. National Qing Hua University is listed as the second-best Taiwanese school in the Q-S World University Rankings. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is still the top university in the world, for the eighth consecutive (連續) year. ---- US Trump to Discuss Detained Canadians with Xi US President Donald Trump says he is willing to talk about the two Canadians held in China when he meets Xi Jinping. U.S. correspondent William Denselow reports. < [CLIP] Slug: > ---- EU No Deal on Top Jobs Leaders of the European Union could not agree on who to name for the EU's top jobs. They will hold another special summit on June 30th. EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said the issue was still far too complicated. He says there are many candidates to replace him, Council President Donald Tusk, and four other top jobs. Under EU rules, the member countries choose who will run the commission, replacing Juncker. The European Parliament must endorse that choice. ---- Mexico El Salvador Sign Co-op Agreement Mexico and El Salvador signed a cooperation agreement that includes a $30 million Mexican donation for reforestation in the Central American nation. The project to reforest some 50,000 hectares is expected to create 20,000 jobs. It was announced as Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele met Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador in southern Mexico. The US is pressuring Mexico to deal wtih migrants trying to reach the US border. Lopez Obrador said Mexico has plans for projects with Guatemala and Honduras as well.
