Section break ---- C*News Intro I'm ... w/ the top of the hour news ..... ---- E*EZ NEWS JUNE 14, 2019 ---- E*Tai-Ex opening The Tai-Ex opened own 15-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 10,546 on turnover of $1.1-billion N-T. The Taiex followed other Asian markets and fell Thursday. Investors were worried about protests in Hong Kong. The activists have promised to keep protesting against an extradition bill. They fear the bill will take away the legal rights (法定權利) of people in Hong Kong. ---- E*Government Taking Action Against Fall Armyworms Premier Su Tseng-chang says the government is increasing efforts to stop the spread of fall armyworms. This comes after the crop-eating pest (蟲害) was found on farm in Miaoli, Yilan and Chiayi counties. Cabinet spokesperson Kolas Yotaka says Su has told the Council of Agriculture to work with local governments to eliminate fall armyworms as soon as they are found. The government is setting up a fall armyworm response task force (專案組). The team includes officials from central and local governments. They will be in charge of (負責) work to stop the spread of the invasive (侵入的) caterpillar species. Agriculture officials say the caterpillars were carried to Taiwan on southwesterly winds from China. 18 provinces in China have been trying to stop the fall armyworks since January. ---- E*Top Floor of Taipei 101 Opened Public The top floor of the Taipei 101 will be open to the public for the first time starting today. Managers of the building say visitors must make reservations online. Those who make their reservations before the end of this month will get a 10-percent discount. The observation deck (觀景台) can only hold 12 people at a time. Only three groups of 12 people will be allowed in each day. And they will be limited to (僅限於) spending 40 minutes at the very top of the Taipei 101. Tickets to the observation deck cost 3,000 N-T. Before today, the top floor was only open to VIPs. People who have visited the top floor include former US president Bill Clinton and actor Will Smith. ---- E*US Trump Announces Sanders Departure US President Donald Trump says his press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders is leaving the White House. Our Washington Correspondent Simon Marks reports. < [CLIP] Slug: > ---- E*NZ Mosque Shooter Pleads Not Guilty The man accused of killing 51 people at two mosques in New Zealand has pleaded not guilty. Brenton Tarrant is charged wtih 51 counts of murder, 40 counts of attempted murder, and one charge of terrorism for the March 15th attack. The 28-year-old Australian appeared for the hearing through a video link from the maximum security prison (最高安全監獄) in Auckland where he's being held. 80 survivors and family members were in the courtroom. Another 60 watched through video from another room. The judge has scheduled the next hearing for August 15th. ---- E*Chile Earthquake No Major Damage A powerful magnitude-6.5 earthquake has shaken Chile's Pacific coast but there were no immediate reports of major damages or injuries. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck at 7:19 p.m. local time Thursday at a depth of 10 kilometers. Its epicenter was 79.9 kilometers west of the city of Coquimbo.
