Section break ---- C*News Intro I'm ... w/ the top of the hour news ..... ---- E*EZ NEWS MAY 30, 2019 ---- E*Tai-Ex opening The Tai-Ex opened up 5-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 10,307 on turnover of 1.8-billion N-T. The market was a bit lower Wednesday. Investors were worried that the trade dispute between China and the United States will continue, and slow down growth (發展、成長). ---- E*AmCham Calls for Government to Remove 'Irritants' to FTA with the US The American Chamber of Commerce in Taipei says the government should try to get a bilateral trade agreement with Washington. AmCham officials spoke about this while presenting the chamber's 2019 White Paper. Amcham says the ongoing (不斷的、進行中) trade war between the US and China will change the global supply chain, and Taiwan is at a disadvantage because it does not have many trade deals with other countries. AmCham Chairman Leo Seewald says restrictions (限制) on imports of pork and beef from the U-S is still a major barrier to trade between the two sides. He says if these issues are resolved (解決), Taiwan would see "economic and strategic rewards". ---- E*IMD Global Competitive Report Recognizes Government Policy The National Development Council says Taiwan's higher ranking in global competitiveness ( 競爭的) shows government policies are boosting (促進、提高) the economy. The Switzerland-based International Management Development released a 2019 world competitive rankings, putting Taiwan in 16th place, up one place from last year. Taiwan is still Asia's fourth most competitive economy, behind Singapore, Hong Kong, and China. NDC head Chen Mei-ling says the government is encouraging people to invest at home in Taiwan, which is speeding up economic growth and boosting competitiveness. ---- E*Huawei Asks US to Speed Up Case Chinese tech giant Huawei wants US courts to speed up its lawsuit against the US government. The company also warns that if the US puts Huawei on a trade blacklist (黑名單), it would "directly harm" American companies and affect jobs. From Washington, Harry Horton reports. < [CLIP] Slug: > ---- E*Hungary Boat Capsized From Hungary.... A sightseeing boat ran into another boat and sank in the Danube River, leaving seven dead and 21 missing. The boat carrying 33 South Korean passengers and two crew members, was found early today near the Margit Bridge. Rescue officials say seven bodies had been recovered. Seven other people were rescued and in stable condition. South Korean President Moon Jae-in has told officials to do all they can to help with the rescue work.
