Section break ---- C*News Intro I'm ... w/ the top of the hour news ..... ---- E*EZ NEWS MAY 27, 2019 ---- E*Tai-Ex opening The Tai-Ex opened up 15-points this morning from Friday's close, at 10,344 on turnover of 1.1-billion N-T. The market was slightly higher Friday after falling in the last few sessions. The bellwether electronics sector helped push the market higher. But the turnover was moderate (中等), because investors were still worried about rising tradew tensions between the United States and China. They are also troubled by a business ban Washington imposed (施) on Huawei. ---- E*Wan An Drill to Take Place this Week The annual Wan-an air-raid drills (演練、演習) begin today in northern Taiwan. The 30-minute drill will happen 1:30 to 2pm. It will be in the cities of Taipei, New Taipei, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, and Keelung, as well as the counties of Taoyuan and Yilan. The drills will happen tomorrow in Tainan, Kaohsiung, Pingtung, and Kinmen. Hualien, Taitung, and Matsu will have the drill on Wednesday. And Penghu, Taichung, Changhua, Nantou, Yunlin and Chiayi will practice the drill on Thursday. During the drill, people must get off the streets and go indoors. Vehicles will have to pull over (靠邊) to the side of the road and stop. Everyone must follow the instructions of police, military, and evacuation personnel. ---- E*Ko Wraps up Japan Trip Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je has finished his four-day four-city visit to Japan. Ko met with Japanese lawmakers, and learned about energy, post-disaster reconstruction, and saw how Tokyo is preparing to host next summer's Olympic Games. Ko is preparing to bid for Taipei to host the 2030 Asian Games. Reports say the Taipei mayor was treated (對待的、招待的) very well during his visit. Some Japanese media described it as "presidential-level treatment". Along with Tokyo, Ko also visited Toyama, Fukushima and Miyagi prefectures. ---- E*Brexit Party Surges in EU Elections In Britain The Brexit Party and the Liberal Democrats did well in the European Elections. But the parties in power seem to be dealing with (承受,感受到) voters angry over how Brexit is being handled. UK correspondent Olly Barratt reports. < [CLIP] Slug: > ---- E*Congo Boat Sinking Congo officials say a boat sinking has left at least 30 people dead and another 200 missing. They also say many of those on the boat that sank on Lake Mai-Ndombe were teachers Reports say they were taking the boat to collect their salaries (薪水、工資), because roads in the area are in poor condition. Officials estimate that hundreds of people were on board the boat. More than 80 survived (倖存). ---- E*France Gov Cautious Over Renault Fiat Chrysler Talks and turning briefly to business news..... France's government is concerned (關心、憂慮) about a possible merger between French automaker Renault and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. The country's government owns 15-percent of Renault. A French official says the government will only agree to a deal with Fiat Chrysler if it helps France and creates more jobs.
