The market climbed yesterday and closed at over 11-thousand points. Some large cap stocks in electronics and non-high tech sectors gained after trading late in the session. But analysts say many investors are still holding on to their money, and not very willing to take risks (冒險) during this season. ---- E*Want Want Threatens Apple Daily with Defamation Suit Want Want Holdings says it will file a defamation lawsuit against the Apple Daily. It says a report published by the Apple Daily damages Want Want's reputation. The Apple Daily report says Want Want's subsidiary in China, Want Want China Holdings, got up to 71-million U-S dollars in subsidies from the Chinese government between 2017 and 2018. Want Want has media companies in Taiwan, including the China Times newspaper, China Television and CTi TV. Want Want says the subsidies are for attracting investment, and have nothing to do with its media businesses in Taiwan. ---- E*MOTC Calls in Uber to Register as Taxi Service Provider The Ministry of Transport says Uber should register as a taxi service provider if it wants to keep operating (運作) the way it has been in Taiwan. Transport Minister Lin Chia-lung says his office supports "the sharing economy," but Uber must follow the law and compete (競爭) fairly with local taxi companies. Lin also says Uber Taiwan is the company's most profitable branch in Asia. He says Uber should think about cutting its commission fee of 25-percent of the fare by half. Lin says this way, local partners get a more reasonable (合理) share of the money. The MOTC says Uber could spend 5-million N-T to set up a taxi company, and have its 10,000 drivers get taxi drivers' license and operation permits (許可證). ---- E*US White House Dems Clash The Trump administration has missed two deadlines (期限) to answer questions about things the president or his staff have done. AP correspondent Mike Gracia reports. < [CLIP] Slug: > ---- E*India Moderate Earthquake Causes No Damage An earthquake hit northeastern India near the border with China early today. No damage or injuries have been reported. The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake was magnitude 5.9 with an epicenter 33 kilometers north-northwest of Along, India. It was a relatively (相對) shallow (淺) 14 kilometers below the surface. ---- E*Malawi Immunizing Children Against Malaria The World Health Organization says Malawi is the first country to start immunizing children against malaria. The country is using the only licensed (合格的) vaccine for the disease spread by mosquitoes. That vaccine only protects about one-third of the children who get the shot. But those who do get the shot will likely (比較可能,多半) have less severe cases. The disease kills about 435-thousand people every year, most of them children under 5 in Africa. The W-H-O says vaccination programs will start soon in Kenya and Ghana.
