Section break ---- C*News Intro I'm ... w/ the top of the hour news ..... ---- E*EZ NEWS JANUARY 4, 2019 ---- E*MAC Dismissing Existence of "1992 consensus" Mainland Affairs Council Chairman Chen Ming-tong says the "1992 consensus" does not exist. He says Taiwan and China never made such an agreement. Chen says Beijing is trying to force Taiwan to follow its "one country, two systems" model. He also says China does not agree that "the two sides are free to interpret (譯、解) what 'one China' means". Chen's statement comes after China's President Xi Jin-ping called for Taiwan to reunify with China based in the "1992 consensus" and the "one China principle." ---- E*Microplastics Found in Most Coastal Areas An environmental group says microplastics (微型塑料) were found at 51 places around Taiwan's coastline. Kuroshio Ocean Educational Foundation says the Ba-Zhang River estuary in Chiayi City had the most microplastics. They found about 64-pieces of microplastics per cubic meter of seawater there. The Hou-Jing River estuary and Heping Island Park in Keelung were the second and third areas with highest microplastics pollution. ---- E*US Trump Threatens Veto Against Democrats The White House says President Donald Trump will veto (否決) any move to re-open the US government unless he gets money for his border wall with Mexico. Our Washington Correspondent Simon Marks reports. < [CLIP] Slug: > ---- E*NKorea Diplomat Hiding in Italy South Korea's spy agency says North Korea's top diplomat (外交官) in Italy has gone into hiding. South Korean officials say Jo Song Gil went into hiding with his wife in November, before his job in Italy ended late that month. The officials did not give any information about Jo's location or if he plans to defect to South Korea. ---- E*Thailand Preps for Tropical Storm Pabuk Thailand officials have stopped ferry services and are evacuating people as a major tropical storm is set to hit the country soon. Rain was already falling around the Gulf of Thailand, and officials say there will be torrential (滂沱、) rain, strong winds, and rough seas. Tropical Storm Pabuk is expected to make landfall late today. Weather officials say the storm will hit southern Thailand's east coast through Saturday.
