The Tai-Ex opened up 4-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 10-thousand 726 on turnover of 1.7-billion N-T. The market moved lower Wednesday, extending losses from the previous session, but late buying meant the Tai-Ex still finished the day above the 10,700-point mark. Meanwhile .. The Taiwan Futures Exchange is currently trading at 10-thousand 750 - and trading volume stands at 58-thousand 847. ---- E*EZ MOFA head warns on China 'coercion' Foreign Minister Joseph Wu is warning about China's "coercion 脅迫" of Taiwan - saying it poses a threat to regional security and global democracy. Speaking in a recorded video address to a conference at the Global Taiwan Institute in Washington, Wu described Taiwan's rivalry with China as a "David versus Goliath struggle 大衛大戰巨人歌利亞," and he appealed for 呼籲 closer economic and security ties with Washington. According to Wu, if China "is allowed to push Taiwan around and force Taiwan to surrender through coercion, there will be severe global consequences on the democratic way of life and the rule of law 對於民主的生活方式以及法治都將有嚴重影響." ---- E*EZ Transitional Justice Commission vice chairman resigns The vice chairman of the Transitional Justice Commission 促進轉型正義委員會 has resigned a month after he drew widespread criticism for remarks about a K-M-T mayoral candidate. Zhang Tien-qin's comments about New Taipei mayoral candidate Hou You-yi were viewed as being politically motivated and inappropriate. And speaking to reporters after stepping down, Zhang apologized for describing Hou as "the worst example of transitional justice." The remark referred to Hou's role in the attempted arrest of Taiwan independence advocate 主張台獨人士 Zheng Nan-rong in 1989. ---- E*EZ Trump warns on Hurricane Florence In international news ... U-S President Donald Trump is urging those living in the path of Hurricane Florence to comply with 遵守 all evacuation orders and emergency instructions 撤離命令以及各項緊急措施指示. Speaking at the White House, Trump said "protection of life is the absolute highest priority" and he warned that Florence could be "one of the biggest ever to hit the East Coast." The storm is still a Category 3 hurricane with winds of 192-kilometers-an-hout as it approaches the North and South Carolina coasts. The National Weather Service is predicting the hurricane will blow ashore 登陸 as early as Friday afternoon along the North Carolina-South Carolina line, then push its rainy way westward, with a potential for catastrophic inland flooding 可能造成內陸水災大災難. ---- E*EZ El Salvador's former president sentenced to 10 years for corruption El Salvador's former President Tony Saca has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for corruption after pleading guilty to diverting 挪用 more than 300-million U-S dollars in state funds 國家公款. Saca the first ex-president of the Central American country to be convicted of graft 因貪汙定罪. He was accused of criminally diverting the money from government coffers 國庫 to favor his businesses and third parties, and also ordered to repay 260-million dollars as part of a civil judgment.
