Section break ---- News Intro I'm ... w/ the top of the hour news ..... ---- T*Taiex update The Tai-Ex opened down 37-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 10,957 on turnover of 2.4-billion N-T. ---- T*US defense bill supporting Taiwan security The US House and Senate have passed a defense bill that includes support for Taiwan security. The bill says the US Secretary of Defense should look at ways to boost Taiwan's military forces, and give recommendations (建議) and planned actions to Congress within one year. It also includes ways to step up bilateral cooperation, and expands US Taiwan joint training, military sales, security cooperation, and senior-level military-to-military engagements. The bill calls for a service secretary or member of the joint chiefs of staff to visit Taiwan, in keeping with the newly-passed Taiwan Travel Act. The final bill is now expected to pass this Thursday. But the bill will not become law until it is signed by the president. ---- T*BBQ restaurants inspected all subpar The Department of Consumer Protection says many BBQ restaurants are not meeting government standards. Officials say these restaurants must improve or face fines or close. Health inspectors checked 18 BBQ restaurants in Taipei, Taoyuan, Taichung, Chiayi, Tainan and Kaohsiung. Not one of them met the standards for all four categories tested. Those categories are ingredients, hygiene, facility (設施) management, and fire safety. ---- T*Beautiful Bays event in Penghu September And .... The 2018 World Congress and Carnival of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World will take place in Penghu in late September. The county government says about 30 countries will be part of the event. County Magistrate Chen Guang-fu says the carnival will help promote the beauty of Penghu, and attract more tourists. The Club of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World started in France in 1996, and now covers bays in 38 countries and regions. ---- US immigrants deported without children The Trump administration says that over 450 migrant parents may have been deported from the U.S. without their children. US correspondent Mary MacCarthy has more: < [CLIP] Slug: > ---- Canada Toronto shooting The Toronto City Council has voted to urge (催促) Canada's government to ban the sale of handguns and handgun ammunition in the city. The council's 41-4 vote came two days after a man shot two people to death and wounded 13 others in the city. It is illegal in Canada to have an unregistered handgun or any kind of rapid-fire weapon. Canada also requires training, a personal risk assessment, two references, spousal notification and criminal record checks. ---- Congo Ebola vaccine Congo's health ministry has announced that the country's latest outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus is over. Health experts said the use of a still-experimental vaccine on more than 3-thousand-300 people helped contain (遏制) the outbreak.
