A military drill to test the abilities of Taiwan's Armed Forces was held in Taichung. The operation involved live fire(實彈) and began at 8am yesterday at the mouth of the Da-jia river. The exercise(演習) started with the dispatch(派遣) of a number of drones(無人機) to collect information on the invading forces(侵略軍). Officials say the drill is a routine(例行) yearly live-fire drill to test the military's combat abilities, and test the Army's ability to work with Air Force and Navy personnel. ---------- President Tsai Ing-wen is touting Taiwan's democracy(民主主義). Speaking at the 15th anniversary of the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy(臺灣民主基金會), Tsai said the Taiwanese people's efforts to achieve democracy and their accomplishments(成就) in that area are clear. She pointed out that Freedom House gave Taiwan 93 out of 100 points in its 2018 Freedom in the World report. That is two points higher than last year. More proof of Taiwan's strong democracy is the fact that press-freedom advocate group Reporters Without Borders(無國界記者) established(成立) its first Asian office in Taipei last year. President Tsai also said transitional justice(轉型正義) is the last mile on Taiwan's journey of democratization(民主化) and that the launch of the Transitional Justice Commission last month was "a big stride" in the right direction. ------------------- and... The Grand Hyatt Taipei was ranked the ninth-best hotel in Asia. The hotel was recognized(認可) in a poll by Luxury Lifestyle Magazine Readers' Travel Awards 2018. The top hotel in Asia was Indonesia's Viceroy Bali. Meanwhile, Taiwanese airline EVA Air made the rankings for Best Long Haul(長程) Airline - coming in third place. EVA surpassed British Airways, but fell behind Emirates and Virgin Atlantic. ---- US Travel Ban in world news... The Supreme Court's (最高法院)decision to uphold(維持) US President Donald Trump's travel ban(禁令) is being met with outrage(惡氣) and heartbreak at demonstrations(抗議). Protesters chanted, cheered and held signs reading ``No ban, no wall.'' Crowds included those separated(隔離) from family as a result of the ban, which covers people from five countries with predominantly(比重大) Muslim populations: Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria and Yemen as well as North Korea and some Venezuelan government officials and their families. ---- Colombia Coca Boom Colombia's government has authorized(授權) the use of herbicide(殺草劑)-spraying drones to tackle(對付) a record surge in cocaine(可卡因) production(產生). Outgoing President(離任總統) Juan Manuel Santos three years ago banned(禁止) the aerial spraying(空中噴射) of coca crops because of health(健康) and environmental(環境) risks(風險). He says that technical developments(技術發展) have now made spraying the crops with the pesticide less risky. ---- Hollywood #MeToo A Hollywood celebrity talks about sexual assault(性侵害) before a Senate(上議院) committee.
