I'm ______ and it's time for Easy EZ News on ICRT. ---- T*Tai-Ex opening The Tai-Ex opened up 8.2-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 10,818 on turnover of $1.9-billion N-T. ---- T*MND touts local defense industry and US weapons The Ministry of National Defense says it will keep working to develop Taiwan's defense industry. Ministry spokesperson Chen Chong-ji says President Tsai Ing-wen has repeated her promise to raise Taiwan's defense budget by at least 2-percent each year. Chen also says the foreign ministry is working to maintain a good relationship with the U-S, to get defense equipment and services. Reports say the government is working to buy advanced weapons systems, including missiles, drones and electronic warfare (戰) systems, fighter aircraft and ballistic missile defense systems. ---- T*Taipei sees drop in traffic accident fatalities Taipei officials say there were less deaths caused by traffic accidents in 2017. City officials say 65 deaths happened within 24 hours of a traffic accident in Taipei last year. That's the lowest rate in 20 years. And that is 27 percent lower than such deaths in 2016. Officials say only about 2-percent of all traffic accidents which caused deaths in Taipei last year were due to (由於) drunk driving. ---- Republican reaction on Trump racism From the U-S.... Republicans are angry after President Donald Trump described Haiti and Nigeria in crude (粗俗) terms during a Cabinet meeting earlier this week. The President asked his staff why the US couldn't get more immigrants from Norway instead. Our Washington Correspondent Simon Marks reports. < [CLIP] Slug: > ---- UN international migration UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is asking all countries to look at the positive part of migration. The United Nations chief says countries that try to stop migration lose an opportunity to get more laborers, and encourage people to enter the country illegally. The secretary-general was speaking about his report "Making Migration Work for All". The report will be used for negotiations on a global pact (協議) on migration that is expected to be adopted later this year. ---- Myanmar earthquakes Myanmar was hit by several earthquakes earlier today. The U.S. Geological Survey said the first quake just before 1 a.m. local time. The magnitude-6 tremor had a shallow depth of 10 kilometers. The epicenter was about 172 kilometers north of Yangon. Three quakes of magnitude-5.3 and magnitude-5.2 followed within 20 minutes. Myanmar Earthquake Committee said the epicenters were close to at least two dams (水壩).
