The Tai-Ex opened up 14-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 10,584 on turnover of 1.7-billion N-T. The market closed lower Monday on the back of renewed geopolitical tensions (地緣政治的緊張情勢再起) following North Korea's latest nuclear test. Stocks across the board came under pressure, but reduced concern over a possible rate hike (可能升息) by the U-S Fed at its next policymaking meeting lent some support to the local main board (台灣股市). ---- T*Cabinet resign en masse The Cabinet will resign en masse (內閣總辭) on Thursday following the resignation yesterday of Premier Lin Quan. Speaking to reporters Monday, Lin said he informed President Tsai Ing-wen of his intention to step down in June. The government has not said when a new Cabinet could be sworn-in (宣誓就職), but reports are claiming it could be as early as Friday. There is also speculation Tainan Mayor William Lai could be appointed premier - and the Presidential Office has said it willl hold a press conferance at 11:30 this morning to explain the matter. ---- T*Vietnam migrant workers' protests Vietnamese migrant workers (移工) and labor rights activists protested in front of the National Police Agency in Taipei on Monday over the shooting of a Vietnamese worker on August 31-st. Twenty-seven year-old Nguyen Kwoc Pee was shot dead by police in Xinchu County after he allegedly (據稱) attacked officers as they were trying to arrest him for vandalizing (破獲) and stealing items from a car. According to the N-P-A, the shooting occurred after Nguyen resisted arrest and attempted to get inside a police car. The officer at the scene fired nine shots at Nguyen, who was pronounced dead on arrival at a near-by hospital. The protesters are demanding a thorough investigation of the case and for surveillance footage or other images of the shooting to be made public to determine if excessive police force (警察是否執法過當) was used. ---- T*CWB on tropical storm The Central Weather Bureau says there is a high probability that a tropical depression (熱帶性低氣壓) east of the Philippines will become the 17-th storm of this year's Pacific typhoon season. According to the weather bureau, the tropical depression could be classified as a tropical storm (輕度颱風) sometime today and it could issue a sea warning for the storm shortly thereafter. The tropical depression is currently located some 800-kilometers southeast of E-luan-bi at the island's southernmost tip and moving in a northwesterly direction. Forecasters say it is still too early to say whether the storm will affect Taiwan. ---- UN .. turning to world news... The United States is pushing the United Nations Security Council to adopt its strongest diplomatic measures against North Korea following Pyongyang's latest nuclear test. A-P's Ben Thomas reports. < [CLIP] Slug: > ---- Colombia .. Negotiators from the National Liberation Army rebel group say they have agreed a temporary ceasefire (暫時停火) with the Colombian government. It is the first time the two sides have agreed a ceasefire in more than 50 years of conflict. The announcement comes as Pope Francis is due to visit Colombia. Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos said the truce (停火) would begin on October 1-st and would last until January 12-th. ---- China .. China's President Xi Jin-ping says Beijing will give 80-million U-S dollars in funding for BRICS (金磚五國) cooperation plans. Xi has offered 76-million dollars for a BRICS economic and technology cooperation plan, and another 4-million dollars for projects at the group’s New Development Bank. Xi made the promise Monday - on the first day of a three-day leaders summit in the southeastern city of Xiamen. The BRICS leaders' summit brings together the heads of state from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. ---- WEATHER AM ..... Looking at the weather across Taiwan ... We can expect ....
