The Tai-Ex opened down 9-points this morning from Friday's close, at 10,585 on turnover of 1.6-billion N-T. The market closed slightly higher Friday, moving closer to the stiff technical resistance point (堅強的技術回檔點) of 10,600 points, as investors waited for the latest U-S job data. ---- T*Avian Flu Health officials in New Taipei are on high alert after a slaughterhouse (屠宰場) reported highly pathogenic (高致病性) avian flu H-5 infections (禽流感感染) in chickens on three of its nine slaughter lines. The New Taipei Domestic Poultry Slaughterhouse found that one chicken on each of the three slaughter lines showed symptoms of avian flu infection on September 1-st. The slaughterhouse informed the local government and the Council of Agriculture of the findings immediately and an initial investigation shows the infected poultry (遭感染的雞群) came from one chicken farm in Yun-Lin County and another in Taoyuan. Local animal health authorities has been ordered to conduct source quarantines (源頭檢疫) at the farms and the three affected slaughter lines have been shut down for sterilization (消毒). ---- T*Armed Forces Day Tens of thousands of military veterans marked Armed Forces Day (軍人節) Sunday with rallies islandwide to show their support for the military while also voicing anger over the government's pension reform plans. Around 30,000 veterans staged protests in 14 cities and counties around the island. Former opposition K-M-T Chairwoman Hong Xiu-zhu attended the rally in Taipei to show her support for the veteran's protest and she attacked the government's pension reform efforts - describing them as unconstitutional (違憲). ---- T*Child welfare A poll by the Child Welfare League Foundation (兒童福利聯盟) shows that over 58-per cent of students at elementary and junior high schools believe their commutes are dangerous (通勤很危險) due to traffic. The survey found that most students walk to school, while others are dropped-off or picked-up (接送) by scooter, bicycle or car. The survey results show that 44-per cent of students are accompanied (陪伴) by their families, while only 25-per cent travel to school on their own. In terms of road traffic safety, 25-per cent said they have almost been hit by vehicles on their journeys to and from school over the past year, with most of such incidents taking place at pedestrian crosswalks (行人穿越道) while the green "walk" light is flashing. Meanwhile, 13.4-per cent said they were injured during their school journeys over the past year. ---- Koreas Turning to world news... The U.N. Security Council has scheduled an emergency meeting after North Korea conducted its most powerful nuclear test to date (到目前為止). The U.S., Japan, France, Britain and South Korea requested Monday's meeting after North Korea detonated (引爆) what it called a hydrogen bomb. Meanwhile, South Korea's military says it conducted a live-fire exercise (實彈演練) simulating (模擬) an attack on North Korea's nuclear test site to "strongly warn'' Pyongyang over the latest nuclear test. ---- China BRICS A summit of five major developing countries will open Monday after host Chinese President Xi Jinping called on them to stand up together against a growing tide of protectionism (一起反對風起雲湧的保護主義) across the world. Leaders of the BRICS nations (金磚五國)- Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa - are meeting in the southeastern Chinese city of Xiamen to discuss how to deal with problems arising from globalization (面對全球化產生的問題). Xi also met with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss how to handle North Korea's latest nuclear test and enhancing military cooperation between the two countries. ---- Steely Dan Steely Dan co-founder and guitarist Walter Becker has died.
