T*Taiex update

 

The Tai-Ex opened down 21-points this morning from yesterday's close, at

9,725 on turnover of 1.7-billion N-T.

T*Protesters rally outside LY

 

Hundreds of protesters are outside the Legislative Yuan today.

 

The civil servants, teachers, and military personnel want to stop lawmakers

from looking over possible changes to the state pension (退休金).

 

There is razor wire and lines of police around many government buildings

there.

 

The Taipei City police have 2,000 officers at the Presidential Office, the

Cabinet Building, the Legislative Yuan, the Ministry of the Interior, and the

presidential residence.

 

The protest has been organized by the Pension Reform Oversight Alliance.

T*Chinese dissident given temp housing

 

The government has given a person from China a temporary (暫時) place to stay.

 

Zhang Xiang-zhong left his tour group on April 13th, one day after arriving

in Taipei on a package tour.

 

He is hoping to get political asylum (庇護) in Taiwan.

 

He told Radio Free Asia on April 14th that he was imprisoned in China for

three years, because he worked with a civic group (公民團體).

 

He went missing a day after that interview, and police found him in New

Taipei's Xindian district late Monday.

T*Former Sunflower protestor sentenced for perjury

 

And .... 

 

A former Sunflower movement protester has been sentenced to three months in

prison for perjury (偽誓、偽證).

 

32-year-old Johanne Liou was found guilty of falsifying evidence in an

investigation.

 

The media called Liou "the Sunflower Queen" during the 2014 student-led

protests.

 

She wanted to sue Next Magazine after it published a report saying she worked

as an escort and prostitute.

US Navy ship in NKorean waters

 

The U-S Navy says an aircraft carrier will get to waters near North Korea

next week.

Turkey opposition push to void referendum

 

Turkey's opposition party wants to void the results of the country's recent

referendum (

公民投票).

 

The Sunday vote gets rid of the job of prime minister, and changes Turkey's

parlimentary government to a presidential government.

 

The opposition says there were some things wrong with the voting.

UK pound jumps higher

 

and finally....

 

The British currency is at its highest level in half a year.

 

The pound went up 1.6-percent yesterday.

 

But it is still 15 percent lower than the level it was trading at before the

country voted in June to leave the EU.
