The Tai-Ex opened up 7-points this morning from Friday's close, at 9,740 on
turnover of 1.2-billion N-T.
The market took a beating Friday -- ending more than 1-per cent lower as
sentiment was affected by rising geopolitical tensions
(地緣政治方面的緊張情勢) after the United States dropped a powerful bomb in
Afghanistan earlier in the day.
Registration for the upcoming K-M-T leadership election began this morning.
Those seeking the post of K-M-T chairperson are required to submit a
registration form and a list of supporting signatures (支持者連署) from at
least 3-per cent of K-M-T members to register as a candidate.
It is currently a six-way race for the chairmanship and the K-M-T Central
Standing Committee has set up a nine-member election supervisory committee
(九人監督委員會) to determine the validity (是否有效) of the signatures.
There will be a two-week campaign period from May 6-th through 19-th before
the election is held on May 20-th.
T*Local newspaper China Post
The China Post has announced it will stop publishing a printed version of the
newspaper (停止紙本報紙) on May 15-th, after 65 years.
According to chairman and publisher George Hsieh, the digital news platform
will cooperate with other media outlets (其他的媒體) to offer users news
reports and videos from a wide range of sources.
The China Post was first printed in 1952 and it launched its app online last
And the newspaper's publishers says the app has been well received -- leading
to a higher click through rate (點擊率) and reading rate (閱讀率) for news
stories than for the print version of the newspaper.
T*Badminton player won again
Taiwan's Dai Zi-ying beat second-ranked Carolina Marin of Spain Sunday to win
the 2017 World BWF Super Series Singapore Open Badminton Championship
Dai beat Marin in two straight sets in the final.
The latest victory was Dai's fifth consecutive super series title and her
second victory over Marin this year, after having beaten the Spaniard at the
Malaysian Open final last Sunday.
Dai is scheduled to return to Taiwan later today - after which she will train
for her next tournament before leaving on April 23-rd for the Badminton Asia
Championships in Wu-han, China.
Turning to world news...
U-S Vice President Mike Pence is visiting a military base near the
Demilitarized Zone (非軍事區) separating North and South Korea a day after
the North conducted a failed missile launch.
Pence arrived at Camp Bonifas earlier this morning for a briefing with
military leaders and to meet with American troops stationed (駐紮在) there.
He is in South Korea as part of a 10-day tour of Asia.
The joint U-S-South Korean military camp is just outside the DMZ.
And the the visit comes after a North Korean missile test failed Sunday.
Pence has called the attempted launch a "provocation" (挑釁).
Turkish President Recep Erdogan declared victory in Sunday's referendum that
will grant sweeping powers (超大權力) to his presidency -- hailing the
result as a "historic decision."
Speaking to reporters in Istanbul, Erdogan said unofficial results showed the
"yes" side had won by a margin (差距) of 1.3-million votes.
Returns carried by state-run media showed that with nearly 99 percent of the
vote counted, the "yes" vote had about 51.3-percent compared to 48.7-per
cent for the "no" vote.
Turkey's main opposition party vowed to challenge the results.
Thousands of migrants (移民) have been saved from the sea near Libya during
one of the busiest weekends of the year for rescue workers.
More than 2,000 people were rescued on Friday and 3,000 on Saturday in dozens
of separate rescues.
However, the Italian Coast Guard says at least seven people drowned as aid
workers struggled to rescue more than 1,500 migrants in one operation.
An eight-year-old boy was among the dead.
Facebook has released a statement condemning (譴責) the killing of a
Cleveland man that police say was carried out (執行) live on the social

Police say Steve Stephens shot a 74-year-old man Sunday afternoon while he
was recording live on Facebook.
