First local news....

The Tai-Ex opened up 7-points this morning from Friday's close, at 9,740 on

turnover of 1.2-billion N-T.

The market took a beating Friday -- ending more than 1-per cent lower as

sentiment was affected by rising geopolitical tensions

(地緣政治方面的緊張情勢) after the United States dropped a powerful bomb in

Afghanistan earlier in the day.

T*KMT leadership

Registration for the upcoming K-M-T leadership election began this morning.

Those seeking the post of K-M-T chairperson are required to submit a

registration form and a list of supporting signatures (支持者連署) from at

least 3-per cent of K-M-T members to register as a candidate.

It is currently a six-way race for the chairmanship and the K-M-T Central

Standing Committee has set up a nine-member election supervisory committee

(九人監督委員會) to determine the validity (是否有效) of the signatures.

There will be a two-week campaign period from May 6-th through 19-th before

the election is held on May 20-th.

T*Local newspaper China Post

The China Post has announced it will stop publishing a printed version of the

newspaper (停止紙本報紙) on May 15-th, after 65 years.

According to chairman and publisher George Hsieh, the digital news platform

will cooperate with other media outlets (其他的媒體)  to offer users news

reports and videos from a wide range of sources.

The China Post was first printed in 1952 and it launched its app online last

year.

And the newspaper's publishers says the app has been well received -- leading

to a higher click through rate (點擊率) and reading rate (閱讀率) for news

stories than for the print version of the newspaper.

Korea ..

Turning to world news...

U-S Vice President Mike Pence is visiting a military base near the

Demilitarized Zone (非軍事區) separating North and South Korea a day after

the North conducted a failed missile launch.

Pence arrived at Camp Bonifas earlier this morning for a briefing with

military leaders and to meet with American troops stationed (駐紮在) there.

He is in South Korea as part of a 10-day tour of Asia.

The joint U-S-South Korean military camp is just outside the DMZ.

And the the visit comes after a North Korean missile test failed Sunday.

Pence has called the attempted launch a "provocation" (挑釁).

Turkey ...

Turkish President Recep Erdogan declared victory in Sunday's referendum that

will grant sweeping powers (超大權力) to his presidency --  hailing the

result as a "historic decision."

Speaking to reporters in Istanbul, Erdogan said unofficial results showed the

"yes" side had won by a margin (差距) of 1.3-million votes.

Returns carried by state-run media showed that with nearly 99 percent of the

vote counted, the "yes" vote had  about 51.3-percent compared to 48.7-per

cent for the "no" vote.

Turkey's main opposition party vowed to challenge the results.

Thousands of migrants (移民) have been saved from the sea near Libya during

one of the busiest weekends of the year for rescue workers.

More than 2,000 people were rescued on Friday and 3,000 on Saturday in dozens

of separate rescues.

However, the Italian Coast Guard says at least seven people drowned as aid

workers struggled to rescue more than 1,500 migrants in one operation.

An eight-year-old boy was among the dead.

----

Facebook ..

Facebook has released a statement condemning (譴責) the killing of a

Cleveland man that police say was carried out (執行)  live on the social

media site.

The company on Sunday called it a "horrific crime," and said that it works

hard to "keep a safe environment on Facebook."

Police say Steve Stephens shot a 74-year-old man Sunday afternoon while he

was recording live on Facebook.

In the video, Stephens says he has also killed more than a dozen other

Police have not verified (證實) that claim.
