The market edged lower Wednesday amid regional uncertainties and analysts say
the market's focus today will be on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing and
Largan Precision - as the two companies hold investor conferences in Taipei.
T*President Tsai on Li Mingzhe
President Tsai Ing-wen says her administration is taking all necessary
measures to ensure the release of human rights advocate (擁護人權人士) Lee
Ming-che - who has been detained in China since March 19-th.
According to D-P-P spokesperson Wu Pei-yi, Tsai told senior party executives
that her government is doing everything within its power so Lee can soon
China's Taiwan Affairs Office Wednesday warned authorities here in Taiwan not
to use the incident to attack China - saying that could also lead to worsened
ties between the two sides (會讓兩岸關係惡化).
T*Taipei Mayor Ko
Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je has told city councilors (市議員) that he plans to
invite Chinese President Xi Jin-ping to attend the Taipei Summer Universiade
The statement came after Ko said he is unlikely to meet with China's head of
state when he travels to Shanghai in June to attend the Taipei-Shanghai Forum
Ko says the Taipei City Government is currently still in the process of
finalizing dates for the forum (正在確定會期)- but Shanghai city government
officials are considering holding the event from June 25-th through 27-th.
According to the Taipei mayor, his delegation to Shanghai is considering
visiting Beijing to deliver an invitation to officials overseeing (主管)
China’s preparations for the Universiade.
T*Google on Taiwan's power plant data
Google says it is open to the possibility of cooperating with some of the
island's larger power plants as it seeks renewable energy sources for its
local data center (Google 替它的資料中心尋找再生能源來源).
Speaking in Taipei Wednesday, Google's global energy policy chief Marsden
Hanna said the most practical way for the company to obtain renewable energy
is by plugging into the electricity grid fed by wind farms close to Changhua
Coastal Park (跟彰化外海風力發電的電力網聯結) .
Hanna said Google is confident that the renewable energy generated in Taiwan
can meet the needs of its center and is optimistic about the efforts of the
Tsai administration to promote renewable energy.
Turning to world news...
U.S. President Donald Trump says the U.S. is "not getting along with Russia
at all'' (跟俄國根本無法相處) and relations between the two global powers are
at an "all-time low'' (兩國關係史上最低潮).
Trump says in a White House news conference today that he's hopeful he can
improve relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin but says they are
going to see what happens.''
The president spoke alongside the secretary-general of NATO shortly after
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson met with Putin in Moscow.
Tillerson told reporters the two countries have reached a "low point'' in
relations in the aftermath of a chemical attack in Syria.
The U.S. is disputing that it has agreed with Russia on the need for a United
Nations investigation into the chemical attack (聯合國調查化武攻擊).
UA passenger takes legal action
Lawyers for the passenger forcibly removed (被強行趕下飛機) from a United
Airlines plane in Chicago filed an emergency request in state court
(已經向該州法庭提出緊急要求) Wednesday, requiring the airline to preserve
(保存) videos and other evidence related to the incident.
A cell phone video of Dr. David Dao being dragged off the flight, bleeding,
went viral (在網路上瘋傳) and sparked international outrage (激起國際公憤).
