Section break ---- C*News Intro I'm ... w/ the top of the hour news ..... ---- E*EZ NEWS AUGUST 29, 2019 ---- E*Tai-Ex opening The Tai-Ex opened up 5.8-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 10,440 on turnover of $1.48-billion N-T. The market moved higher and closed above 10,400 points, with msot of the buying in the semiconductor sector. But turnover was still thin, because investors were still worried about the trade war between the US and CHina. They are also concerned (憂慮) about world economies slowing down. ---- E*19 Fraud Suspects Detained After Being Sent Back from US Nineteen Taiwanese fraud suspects are being held by police, after being arrested in the US. They were sent back after being taken by police at a villa (別墅) in Los Angeles. They are now being held by Taichung prosecutors after being arrested at Taoyuan INternational Airport during the June-July period. Police have also discovered that the fraud ring had worked in Hungary, Ireland, and Chile. They've cheated people in China out of 90-million NT. Police have also held many raids (襲擊) at places in Taipei. Officials say several luxury cars were confiscated (沒收), including a Maserati and a Ferrari. ---- E*Amazon Countries to Meet for Rainforest Proteciton Brazil's president says Amazon countries will meet in September to talk about protecting and developing the rainforest. This comes as the Amazon rainforest continues to burn. President Jair Bolsonaro also continued to criticize French President Emmanuel Macron, saying the French leader is trying to show himself as "the one and only person" who cares about the environment. Many countries around the world have accused Bolsonaro of causing the fires in the Amazon. They say he weakened (減弱) laws protecting the environment, and this allowed farmers and developers to set fires more aggresively this year to clear land. Now the Brazilian president says leaders of all Amazon nations except Venezuela will meet Sept. 6-th. The conference will be in Colombia. ---- E*Venezuela Guaido Picks Shadow Cabinet Venezuela's opposition leader Juan Guaido has chosen a cabinet. He is trying to force President Nicolas Maduro from power. Guaido says the five aides are getting ready for a transition (過渡時期) of government and new elections. Guaido claimed presidential powers in January, as the head of the National Assembly. He says Maduro's election last year was a fraud (騙局). Now, Guaido wants opposition politician Leopoldo Lopez to be the general coordinator, and opposition lawmaker Julio Borges to oversee (監視) foreign relations. Guaido has also chosen people to handle economic development, asset recovery, and human rights. ---- E*Climate Activist in NYC After Crossing Atlantic Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg has arrived in New York City after crossing the Atlantic Ocean in a zero-emissions (零排放) racing yacht two weeks ago.
