T*Taiex update

 

The Tai-Ex opened up 28-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 9,768

on turnover of 1.4-billion N-T.

T*Lawmakers back gift inheritance

 

The Legislative Finance Committee has approved a bill to raise gift and

inheritance taxes.

 

Officials say the new rates will be set after all parties meet to talk about

it.

 

The government says the extra money will be used for funding (支住) long-term

healthcare programs for elderly people.

 

The government wants to raise the gift and inheritance tax to between 15 and

20 percent.

T*Defense Minister presents defense review

 

Defense Minister Feng Shi-kuan presented the Ministry of National Defense's

2017 Quadrennial (四年度) Defense Review to lawmakers today.

 

Reports say the review talks about China speeding up its military

development, and Chinese military aircraft and ships around Taiwan.

 

The review also talks about the uncertainty over the future direction of the

United States, and Japan using more of its military.

T*Smart City Summit and Expo future plans

 

And ...

 

The Taipei Computer Association says it wants to make the annual Smart City

Summit and Expo the world's most comprehensive (全面) trade show next year.

 

The assocation wants to have more international city officials at the show

next year.

 

The officials would share their experiences in setting up smart cities.

 

This year, the Smart City Summit and Expo had 54 city officials from 29

countries.

US Hawaii blocks Trump travel ban

 

A U-S judge has blocked President Donald Trump's latest (最新的) try at

setting up a travel ban.

France Germany calls for center against radicalization

 

The interior ministers of France and Germany want to set up a European center

to fight Islamic State propaganda (宣傳).

 

The center would fight IS efforts to turn people into its own fighters.

 

Thousands of Europeans, mostly young adults have left the EU to join

extremist groups like IS.

UK foreign secretary visits Somalia

 

Britain's foreign secretary visited Somalia to talk with the country's new

president.

 

Somalia recently declared a national disaster, in dealing with a serious

drought (乾旱), and famine (飢荒).

 

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson says Britain will host a conference on

Somalia on May 11th.
