Section break ---- C*News Intro I'm ... w/ the top of the hour news ..... ---- E*EZ NEWS JULY 17, 2019 ---- E*Tai-Ex Opens Down The Tai-Ex opened down 24-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 10,861 on turnover of 1.5-billion N-T. The market was slightly (略、稍微) higher Tuesday. Some electronic stocks continued to climb from a session earlier, and helped lower the impact of losses in non-tech stocks. But analysts say turnover was not very high. Investors chose to stay on the sidelines (保持觀望) both here in Taiwan and on Wall Street. ---- E*Sea Warning Issued for for Tropical Storm Danas The Central Weather Bureau will probably issue a land warning for Tropical Storm Danas as early as 11:30 this morning. A sea warning was issued late last night. Danas is currently (目前) about 530-kilometers south-southeast of Hengchun. It is moving in a north-northwesterly direction at 15-kilometers-an-hour. If Danas stays on its current path, it will land in the Yilan/Hualien area late tomorrow. It will then leave the island in an area north of Hsinchu early Friday morning before heading into the Taiwan Strait. ---- E*TRA to Improve Train Surveillance and Ticketing Regulations The TRA says it will take steps to improve how it handles crime. The railways administration says it will put surveillance cameras on its trains, and install more ticket barriers (障礙) at stations. This comes after a railway police officer was stabbed to death. The TRA says it will start with putting cameras on electric commuter trains (通勤列車). It hopes to finish with all the trains by 2021. The administration will also buy 600 new intercity trains (城際列車) and 520 new commuter trains. They will all come with security cameras and emergency intercom systems. And the TRA says by 2022, it will install more security barriers at 241 stations, and will strictly (嚴格) follow a "no ticket, no entry" rule. ---- E*NKorea Warns Against US SKorea Drills North Korea has warned the United States and South Korea against holding a joint (聯合) military drill. Bruce Harrison has the story < [CLIP] Slug: > ---- E*WHO Debates Ebola Emergency Declaration The World Health Organization is meeting today to decide if they should declare an international emergency for an Ebola outbreak. This is the fourth time the WHO has met with experts to assess (評估) the virus outbreak. The WHO had decided in the past not to declare (宣布) an emergency. Doing so usually brings more international attention and aid for the issue. This week, a preacher with Ebola took a bus to Goma, a city of more than 2-million people. The WHO now confirms he has died. ---- E*EU President Confirmed Ursula von der Leyen was confirmed as the European Commission president Tuesday. She will be the first woman to hold the job. The German defense minister got just 9 votes over the lowest limit in a European Parliament vote. Von der Leyen will replace Jean-Claude Juncker when his term ends at the end of October.
