Section break ---- C*News Intro I'm ... w/ the top of the hour news ..... ---- E*EZ NEWS MARCH 8, 2019 ---- E*Tai-Ex opening The Tai-Ex opened down 37-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 10,274 on turnover of $1.3-billion N-T. The market was slightly lower Thursday. Most other markets in the region (地區) were the same. Investors were becoming less optimistic about progress (進展) in trade talks between the US and China. ---- E*Anti-ASF Efforts Stepped-Up with Luggage Checks on Travelers from Thailand Officials say passengers (旅客) coming into Taiwan from Thailand will have to have their luggaged checked by customs. The National Emergency Operation Center says this is part of government efforts to stop African Swine Fever from coming into Taiwan. Thailand is the latest country to become a potential (潛在) source of the ASF virus. Currently all luggage brought in by travelers from China, Hong Kong, Macao, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar are checked by customs officials when entering Taiwan. Southeast Asian countries are now being added to the watch list (觀察名單) after an outbreak of ASF in Vietnam last month. ---- E*Seven Charged with Telecom Fraud Seven people have been charged with telecom fraud. The Taichung District Prosecutors' Office say the suspects belong to a ring based overseas (在海外) that cheated people in China out of large sums (金額) of money. All seven have been charged with breaking the Organized Crime Prevention Act. They were arrested in Taichung last October during a raid (襲擊) on a property in the city's Da-Li District. The group is believed to have been based in Japan and Costa Rica. ---- E*Taiwan Wine Wins Gold in Paris A wine made in Taiwan has won a gold medal at an international competition. The Vino Formosa Rosso is made by Shu-Sheng Leisure Domaine, a company in Taichung. The wine is made with dark black and deep-colored Black Queen grapes. The grape can grow in an environment with high heat and humidity (濕度), making it suitable (適合) for planting in Taiwan's climate. The Vinalies Internationales Competition in Paris showed over 3,000 wines from more than 40 countries. ---- E*US Ex-Lawyer Sues Trump Org US President Donald Trump's former (前任的) lawyer Michael Cohen is suing the Trump Organization. He says the organization owes him $1.9 million US dollars. Nick Harper reports. < [CLIP] Slug: > ---- E*El Salvador Women Jailed for Abortion Released El Salvador's Supreme Court cut short the 30-year sentences of three women in prison for abortion. The women had spent 10 years in prison for aggravated homicide. They were convicted of having abortions (墮胎). All three say they miscarried (流產). Now the court says the women were victims of their social and economic situation (社會和經濟環境). It ruled (裁定) that the original sentences were unreasonable, and ordered the women to be released immediately. Another 18 women are still in prison for abortion. In El Salvador, abortions are illegal in all situations. ---- E*Venezuela Power Outtage Large areas of Venezuela do not have power because of an electrical outage (電力中斷、停電) Local media says the blackout started just as workers began going home. Venezuela's state-owned electricity company says the outage happened because of an "attack" on the Guri Dam. The dam is a major source of electricity in the country.
