Section break ---- C*News Intro I'm ... w/ the top of the hour news ..... ---- E*EZ NEWS FEBRUARY , 2019 ---- E*Tai-Ex opening The Tai-Ex opened up 9-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 10,282 on turnover of 1.8-billion N-T. The market moved sharply higher Wednesday to breach the 10,200 point mark on the back of an upturn in the bellwether electronics sector. And analysts say market sentiment improved as investors were more upbeat (樂觀) about a possible deal between the U-S and China to resolve their trade disputes. ---- E*Tsai Says Re-election Bid Aimed at Ensuring 'Freedom of Choice' President Tsai Ing-wen says her main purpose for seeking re-election is to ensure (確保) that generations of Taiwanese will have the freedom to choose their future. According to Tsai, Taiwan wants to survive on its own and ensure its "own" economic prosperity, security, and democracy rather than accept China's "one country, two systems" formula. And she says one of her important duties as president is to safeguard the freedom of choice for future generations, and that remains her mission and is the purpose of her re-election bid. ---- E*EU-Taiwan Bilateral Investment Accord Possible The European Union is reportedly not ruling out the possibility of signing a bilateral investment agreement with Taiwan. The E-U included Taiwan on its list of trade partners for such an agreement in 2015, but has since not held any negotiations with Taipei on the issue. And there have been concerns the E-U's lack of momentum (缺乏動力) on the issue is due to pressure from China. However, speaking at a public hearing in the European Parliament, the European Commission's Peter Berz said although the E-U adheres to (遵守) the "one China" policy, it will not rule out the possibility of signing an investment accord (協定) with Taiwan. ---- E*Trump on N. Korea U.S. President Donald Trump says he's willing to ease sanctions on North Korea if the country takes meaningful steps towards denuclearization (去核化). These comments come a week before the President is set to hold a meeting in Vietnam with North Korea's leader, Kim Jong Un. U.S. correspondent William Denselow reports. < [CLIP] Slug: > ---- E*UN Envoy Says Risk of Israeli-Palestinian War Looms The United Nations Mideast envoy says the prospect of peace between Israel and the Palestinians "is fading by the day as the specter (幽靈) of violence and radicalism (激進主義) grows" and "the risk of war continues to loom large (戰爭的威脅持續逼近)." The official also is also warning that a negotiated two-state solution (談判中的成立兩個國家解決方案) is drifting further away. And the U-N envoy is calling on the international community to remain committed to supporting Israelis and Palestinians to reach a peace deal based on U-N resolutions (聯合國決議) and bilateral agreements. ---- E*Samsung's New Phones Samsung has unveiled a highly anticipated smartphone with a foldable screen. But it's far from clear that consumers will embrace a device that retails for almost $2,000 US dollars, or that it will provide the creative catalyst (催化劑) the smartphone market needs. The Galaxy Fold, announced Wednesday in San Francisco, will sell for $1-thousand 980 dollars when it is released April 26. Consumers willing to pay that hefty price (昂貴的價格) will get a device that can unfold like a wallet. It can work like a traditional smartphone with a 4.6 inch screen or morph into something more like a mini-tablet with a 7.3 inch screen with 6 cameras. ---- E*WEATHER AM ..... Looking at the weather across Taiwan ... Partly cloudy skies with occasional rain showers in the north and northeast.... And partly clear skies in the center and south. Current Temperatures ....
