Section break ---- C*News Intro I'm ... w/ the top of the hour news ..... ---- E*EZ NEWS JANUARY 9, 2019 ---- E*White House Urges Beijing to End Coercion and Talk to Taipei A high-level White House official says China should stop its coercion (強迫) of Taiwan. National Security Council spokesperson Garrett Marquis wrote in a tweet, that "Beijing should stop its coercion and resume dialogue with the democratically-elected administration on Taiwan". Marquis says Washington is against any threat or force making the people of Taiwan accept something they don't want. He says whatever happens between China and Taiwan "must be peaceful and based on the will of the people on both sides". And he went on to say that "any resolution of Cross-Strait differences must be peaceful and based on the will of the people on both sides." The Ministry of Foreign Affairs here in Taipei is expressing its appreciation for the tweets, which it says highlight Washington's continuing support for Taiwan's democratic system and its people. ---- E*Dead Pig Found in Taipei Tests Negative for ASF A dead pig found in downtown Taipei earlier this week did not have African Swine Fever. The animal was found in Da-An District. Officials tested the pig and it was not infected (感染) with ASF. The area where it was found, was disinfected. ---- E*US Trump Aide Lied Documents show former Trump campaign chariman Paul Manafort lied about sharing information with a person with Russian connections (關係). The AP's Ed Donahue reports. < [CLIP] Slug: > ---- E*Canada Visits Detained Citizens in China Canadian officials have visited a Canadian citizen being held in China. They did give any information about their meeting with entrepreneur Michael Spavor. China detained Spavor and ex-diplomat Michael Kovrig on December 10th. Chinese officials say the two had been a part of actions that threaten the national security of China. The arrests came after a top Chinese executive was arrested in Canada on December 1st, at the request (要求) of the United States. ---- E*Greece Far-Left Claims TV Station Bombing A far-left group in Greece says they are responsible for a bomb at a media group office in Athens. The Popular Fighters Group says it bombed Skai TV and radio station, and a daily newspaper to protest the media group's "support" for government policies to cut down on Greece's national debt.
