T*Cold spell linked to over 150 deaths in five days 

Reports say more than 150 people have died over the past week due to  the
cold weather.

Most of the dead were elderly (年老) and sick.

Reports say the cold may have caused people to have heart attacks and
strokes, and caused the deaths of elderly people with the flu.

T*Taxi Driver Indicted 

The taxi driver who attacked a South Korean tourist has been indicted (指控). 

The Shilin District prosecutors office asays 41-year-old Zhan You-ru should
be jailed for 15 years, on charges of sexual assault with the use of drugs.

In January, Zhan put a drug into a drink that he gave three South Korean
women, before sexually assaulting one of the two who passed out in his car.

T*HTC reports 2016 losses

Turning briefly to Taiwan business news...

HTC says it still had losses in 2016.

The company reported over $10 billion NT in net loss for 2016.

But HTC also says sales of its new U Ultra smartphones (手機) should help the
company make money in the first quarter of this year.

investigated.

Gambia to return to Britain

British officials say Gambia will soon return to the Commonwealth.

Britain's foreign secretary met with Gambian president Adama Barrow yesterday
afternoon.

Barrow has promised to reverse (逆轉、倒轉) moves taken by the previous
president Yahya Jammeh.

Jammeh withdrew Gambia from the Commonwealth years earlier.

He also said he would take Gambia out of the International Criminal Court.

Venezuelan cash stash to be counted

and...

Paraguay's Central Bank will help count a large amount (量) of Venezuelan
cash found in a private house.

Officials say there were too many bills for employees in the prosecutor's
office to count it by hand.

The 30 tons of 50- and 100-bolivar bills were found in the Paraguay house,
near the border with Brazil.

Paraguayan officials are trying to find out if the money was brought into the
country legally.
