Section break ---- News Intro I'm ... w/ the top of the hour news ..... ---- T*Taiex update The Tai-Ex opened up 24-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 10,802 on turnover of 2.8-billion N-T. ---- T*2019 Holidays and weekends There will be 115 days of holidays and weekends in 2019. This includes six long weekends lasting three days or longer. The six extended public holidays are the Lunar New Year holiday, 228 Memorial Day, Children's Day and Tombsweeping Festival, the Dragon Boat Festival, the Mid-Autumn Festival and the R-O-C National Day. When a public holiday is on a Tuesday or Thursday, it will be an extended holiday (延長假期). The Saturday before the holiday will be an official makeup day (補充日) in most cases. ---- T*Heavy flooding in the south Heavy flooding continues in parts of Chang-hua, Kaoh-siung, and Ping-tung. The Central Weather Bureau has put out a heavy rain (大雨) warning for Taichung, Changhua, Nantou, Yunlin, Chiayi and Tainan. An extremely heavy rain (豪雨) warning remains for Kaohsiung and Pingtung. The worst flooding happened in Lugang Township in Changhua County, Kaohsiung's Niao-Song District, and areas next to the Da-Ren University and the National University of Science and Technology in Pingtung. ---- T*APEC summit in Kaohsiung And .... The APEC O2O Summit 2018 is continuing in Kaohsiung today. Groups going to the summit want to work with Southeast Asian countries to promote (促進) digital transformation through online to offline services. Economics Minister Chen Rong-jin says he hopes small and medium-sized Taiwanese enterprises (企業) will use the summit to increase international exchanges and develop their digital competitiveness. Ten startups from the Asia-Pacific region are at the summit to work with more than 50 local startups in the fields of financial technology (金融科技), artificial intelligence (人工智能), Internet of Things (物聯網), and virtual reality (虛擬現實) applications. The summit is being organized by the Kaohsiung Economic Development Bureau. ---- US July 4th A man accused of wanting to carry out a terrorist act (恐怖襲擊) during the July 4th celebrations has been arrested in the United States . Demetrius Pitts is believed to have said this to an undercover FBI agent (臥底特工 聯邦調查局 特工). The agency has been watching Pitts for over a year, and he is believed to be supporting Al Qaeda. The FBI says Pitts wanted to carry out attacks, starting with the Independence Day celebrations in Cleveland, Ohio. U.S. correspondent William Denselow reports. < [CLIP] Slug: > ---- Australia church abuse The most senior Roman Catholic cleric (神職人員) in the world found guilty for covering up child sex abuse (兒童性虐待), has been given 12 months of detention (拘留) by the Australian court. Adelaide Archbishop (總主教) Philip Wilson will serve at least 6 months before being given a chance for probation (緩刑). On Aug 14th, the judge will consider home detention for Wilson. The 67-year-old cleric was found guilty of not reporting priest (神父) James Fletcher for abusing two altar boys in Sydney during the 1970s.
