The Tai-Ex opened up 11 points this morning from yesterday's close, at 11,111 on turnover of $2.8 billion NT. ---- T*MOFA mum on US carrier in Taiwan Strait MOFA is not commenting on reports of a possible show of US support for Taiwan. Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Andrew Lee says the Reuters report that the United States is planning to send an aircraft carrier battle group through the Taiwan Strait is not verified. Reuters says it got its information from anonymous (匿名) US officials. The report says Washington is looking at plans to sail a battle group through the strait, but is worried that this would upset China. A U-S carrier group last sailed through the Taiwan Strait in 2007. ---- T*ROC drug smugglers to be prosecuted in Indonesia Indonesian prosecutors want the death penalty for four Taiwanese nationals. Local media reports that the four are charged with trying to smuggle methamphetamine into Indonesia by boat in February. They were found with one ton of mehtamphetamine hidden in 41 rice sacks (麻袋) on their boat. ---- T*Taiwan's new envoy to France on duties and... Taiwan's new top envoy to France says he will work for closer economic and cultural exchanges between the two sides. Deputy Foregin Minister Francois Wu will official become Taiwan's representative to France next month. The position in Paris was held by Zhang Ming-zhong for three years. ---- Guatemala volcano death rise Officials in Guatemala have raised the death toll from a volcano eruption to 75. They say only 23 of the bodies they've found have been identified so far. The Volcano of Fire erupted on Sunday, and hot volcanic material that flowed into communities left many bodies unrecognizeable. DNA testing may be needed to identify the bodies. Officials also say activity in the volcano is increasing. They say dangerous material is flowing down the sides of the volcano again. Some nearby communities were ordered evacuated. ---- US McCain aide The White House aide who made an insensitive remark about Senator John McCain's brain cancer is no longer on the job.
