Section break ---- News Intro I'm ... w/ the top of the hour news ..... ---- T*Taiex update The Tai-Ex opened up 5-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 10,610 on turnover of 2.7-billion N-T. ---- T*VP on biotech plans Vice President Chen Jien-ren says the government wants to make biotechnology Tiawan's next $1-trillion NT industry. Chen says this is part of the government's "5 plus 2 Industrial Innovation (革新) Program" to make Taiwan more competitive. The Ministry of Economic Affairs says currently, Taiwan's biotech industry is worth (值) $315-billion NT. ---- T*Chinese phones banned on military bases The Defense Minister says cellphones made by China are not allowed on military bases here in Taiwan. Yen De-fa says people who work in Taiwan's military are also not allowed to use any smart or feature phones made by Chinese brands (牌). D-P-P lawmaker Tsai Shi-ying asked about the issue after the U-S Defense Department banned Chinese phones made by Huawei and ZTE on U-S military bases. ---- T*Gov considers island tourist cap And .... The government is thinking about limiting the number of visitors to Orchid Island, Green Island, and Xiao-Liu-Qiu Island. The Tourism Bureau says people who live on those islands are worried about the large amounts (量) of garbage from tourists damaging the island environment. The Yeh-Liu Geo-Park, Turtle Island and and Kinmen's Da-Dan Island already have limits on visitor numbers. ---- Hawaii volcano eruption Lava and dangerous gases are still coming out of the Kilauea Volcano on Hawaii's Big Island. US Correspondent Rachel Silverman has details. < [CLIP] Slug: > ---- Nigeria Boko Haram rescue Nigeria's military says more than 1000 people held by militant group (武裝分子) Boko Haram have been rescued. Officials say the hostages were rescued from four villages in the Bama area of Borno State. Most were women and children, and some were men who had been forced to become Boko Haram fighters. ---- UN Cuba Latin American ministers UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is going to Cuba for the opening of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean. Officials say during his visit to Havana, Guterres will also meet with Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel and other senior (高層的、上級的) officials.
