Section break ---- News Intro I'm ... w/ the top of the hour news ..... ---- T*Taiex update The Tai-Ex opened up 34-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 10,961 on turnover of 2.5-billion N-T. ---- T*MOI: Taiwan officially and "aged society" Taiwan is now officially an "aged society". The Ministry of the Interior says 14 percent of Taiwan's total population is now aged over 65. This means on eout of every seven people here in Taiwan is considered (算是、被認為是) a senior citizen. Officials say the percentage of elderly people in Taiwan is about the same as South Korea, but lower than Japan. The ministry warns that Taiwan's population is aging faster than most other countries. ---- T*Older vehicles face fines in zones People using older vehicles could soon be fined for going into special zones. The new rules will affect owners of scooters made before 2003, diesel vehicles made before 1999, and all diesel vehicles that don't have emissions (排放) filters. People using these vehicles in air quality regulation zones could be fined up to $60-thousand NT. Deputy Environment Minister Zhan Shun-gui says this is to encourage such people to buy newer, more environmentally friendly vehicles. A government subsidy program to help people buy new vehicles is set to end in December of next year. ---- T*Cold front to arrive Sunday And .... A cold front will arrive in Taiwan on Sunday. The Central Weather Bureau says the cold wave will make temperatures in the north fall by about 8 degrees. It will also bring heavy rain and thunderstorms (暴雨、雷雨) for large parts of northern Taiwan from Sunday to next Wednesday. ---- FB Zuckerburg testimony Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg has testified in the US Congress. Kevin McAleese reports from the US capitol... < [CLIP] Slug: > ---- France Saudi Arabia Syria response The Crown Prince of Saudia Arabia and French President met to talk about conflicts in Yemen, Iran, and Syria. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is on his first official visit to France. President Emmanuel Macron says France will prepare "a strong and joint response" with the US and Britain on the suspected (嫌疑) use of poison gas that killed 40 people near Damascus Syria. Prince Mohammed says Saudi Arabia would support a military operation in Syria. The two leaders also say their countries will co-organize a conference on humanitarian aid for Yemen.
